Like other Rust Belt cities, Mansfield was once a major center for heavy industry and has been struggling with redefining itself since the collapse of American manufacturing.

The last remaining heavy industries in the area AK Steel and General Motors were cut in half with General Motor's bankruptcy filing in 2009. Of the facilities to be shut down is its Mansfield-Ontario Metal Center. The city is still having a difficult time diversifying its economy and the General Motor's closure will only complicate matters further.

As is common in cities undergoing major economic disruption the cost of living in Mansfield is well below the national average. The cost of living index rankings for December 2009 ranked Mansfield at 77.3, well below the national average of 100. Consequently, getting an apartment in Mansfield is also reasonably affordable. The 2010 Fair Market Rents, as determined by the department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are extremely low, starting with $395 per month for a studio and going up to $819 per month for a four bedroom. With so many people losing their jobs and leaving the area, there should be no problems finding an extremely affordable apartment in Mansfield.
