The cost of living in New York State is 20% above the national average. Housing costs and especially rental costs rank 40% above the national average. Affordable apartments are difficult to come by unless you have a very high paying job, independent wealth or four or five roommates at once. In the city of New York the average studio apartment goes for $1750 per month with utilities right around $189 per month. The city does offer public transportation and in fact, most Natives don't even own a driver's license, let alone a car.

Albany is the real state capital of New York. 100,000 people call it their home. The city is more laid back than its flashier cousin or even bigger cities like Buffalo and Rochester. The city of Albany's cost of living is lower as well, coming in below the national average for apartment living. A one bedroom here will set you back about $600 per month.

Both Rochester and Buffalo have an abundance of apartments at every price range along the spectrum. One bedroom apartments average out at about $700 per month with utility rates coming at about $80 per month. Each city has its own unique personality with a great deal to offer in diversity, historically and culturally.

The largest percentage of state jobs are in the service sector. Other sectors are printing, publishing, mass communications, advertising and entertainment. New York state ranks 7th in the country in manufacturing with nearly 1 million people employed in this industry. Tourism is a very important industry as is agriculture in the more rural locations of the state, where cattle, chickens, corn and wine dominate.
