The climate is temperate and draws boating enthusiasts and others who prefer water sports and sailing as their main outdoor activities. More than 60% of the state is made up of woodlands. It can get pretty cold and snowy during the winter times, lasting until mid March.

Even though it is mainly woodland and forest, the cities of Rhode Island are highly urbanized areas offering plenty of apartments with varying rents and styles to suit many lifestyles. Basically, though, as far as city living goes, you have a choice of two, Providence and Newport.

Providence is the biggest city in Rhode Island and one of the three largest cities in the whole of New England. Providence is a port of entry into the US and a major trade center. Population rests around 175,000 residents, and for the past several years has been undergoing a kind of urban renaissance. The average cost of a two bedroom apartment here is about $900 per month. The nightlife is diverse and eclectic and you don't really need a car if you live in or near the downtown area.

The other urban hub is Newport. It is home to residents who love colonial houses and beautiful gardens and pristine beaches. It is called the sailing capital of the world and is home to the famed Newport Jazz Festival. The apartments in and around this historic waterfront are very expensive in keeping with the cities other local attractions which are also more expensive than the surrounding cities and towns.

Rhode Island is only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long. It is home to a bustling and thriving intellectual community centered around Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design and several other colleges of a little less renown.
