San Diego is only a couple of hours down the road toward Mexico from Los Angeles. But there is a world of difference between the two cities. Horton Plaza is a huge shopping mall with just about anything you can name, on sale. Residents frequent the historic gaslamp quarter as well as the Embarcadero which is filled with trendy local shops, restaurants and nightlife. The world famous San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park as is Wild Animal Park and Sea World. San Diego is a haven for surfers from around the world.

San Diego beach living doesn't come cheap, unfortunately. The overall cost of living is 36% above the national average, with apartment rentals eating up a big part of the personal budget. The median price for an apartment is $760 with the average price for a two bedroom place coming in at about $1200 per month. The vacancy rate is virtually nonexistent at less than one percent. In other words, finding the right place for the right price will be difficult in San Diego. One good thing about this market is that the rental prices increase at a slower rate than nearby communities of Los Angeles and Orange Country.

There are many interesting neighborhoods to explore including the Hillcrest neighborhood near downtown San Diego. This neighborhood is near Balboa Park and offers a number of diverse, cultural and recreational opportunities for enjoyment. If you really want to live on the beach then you might want to explore Ocean Beach. It reminds many of a small village right outside downtown. If you'd rather live outside the city then you might want to look for apartments in La Jolla and Spring Valley. Or try near the universities of California at San Diego and California State at San Diego.

Jobs are prevalent along the San Diego Harbor. It is a major commercial and military transportation hub for that part of the world. Other major industries include electronics, aerospace, medical and scientific research, oceanography and agriculture. And it should surprise no one that tourism is booming in this area with the city's proximity to the Mexican border. This proximity has caused growth in the service industry as well as the service satellite industries.
